What is the Unit Weight and Package Weight?

What Are “Unit Weight” and “Package Weight”?
In Marijuana Software (and METRC), weights tell the system how much is in a package and how much each sellable unit weighs. Get these right and pricing, inventory counts, and compliance all line up.
Key Definitions
Package Weight The total weight of the entire package as it exists in METRC — product plus all included materials. Example: a 1.0 g joint + paper + crutch might have a Package Weight of 1.5 g. This total decreases as units are sold or pre-packed.
Unit Weight The weight of one sellable unit for this item (e.g., 3.5 g per eighth, 1.0 g pre-roll, 0.5 g cart). Used when the product is sold in Units rather than by the scale.
Order Quantity For pre-packed items, the number of units you’re creating from a bulk package (e.g., 8 units at 3.5 g each).
Unit of Measure (UoM) Whether the product is sold by Grams (weight-based) or Units (each piece). METRC requires the correct UoM per package.
Why This Matters
Pricing Correct Unit Weight ensures the right price tier applies (eighth, quarter, ounce, etc.) and prevents under/over-charges.
Inventory Using the correct UoM keeps package depletion accurate and prevents negative inventory.
Compliance METRC validations (e.g., “valid values are: Each”) depend on matching UoM and weights.
Common Scenarios
Bulk Flower Jar → Sold by Weight • UoM: Grams  • Unit Weight: not required You sell directly from the jar by the scale; Package Weight counts down with each sale.
Bulk Flower → Pre-Packs (Eighths) • Change UoM to Units  • Set Unit Weight = 3.5 g • Set Order Quantity to the number of eighths you’re making (e.g., from a 28 g jar → 8 units). Package Weight will reduce by 3.5 g × units created.
Pre-Rolls • UoM: Units  • Unit Weight = grams per roll (e.g., 1.0 g) Ensures METRC receives the correct “Each” sale with a known weight per piece.
Cartridges / Edibles • UoM: Units  • Unit Weight often holds net weight (e.g., 0.5 g oil, 10 mg piece). Follow your state rules for the expected weight/serving declaration.
Where Do I See/Edit These?
Package Details Products → find your item → click the arrow next to the Batch #Edit Package. • Package Weight is shown on the page. • Change UoM (GramsUnits), set Unit Weight, and set Order Quantity when creating pre-packs. Save to apply.
POS Behavior • UoM = Grams → sold by scale/weight. • UoM = Units → each scan removes one unit (with the defined Unit Weight).
Worked Examples
Example A — 1 oz → eighths Start: Package Weight = 28.0 g (UoM: Grams). Convert to pre-packs: set UoM = Units, Unit Weight = 3.5 g, Order Quantity = 8. Result: 8 units created, Package Weight –= 28.0 g → 0 g remaining.
Example B — 100 × 1 g pre-rolls Start with a bulk package of 100 g. Set UoM = Units, Unit Weight = 1.0 g, Order Quantity = 100. Result: 100 units created, Package Weight –= 100 g → 0 g.
Common Mistakes & How to Avoid Them
UoM mismatch Error like “Valid values are: Each” → METRC expects Units. Fix: Change UoM to Units and set Unit Weight.
Wrong Unit Weight Eighth set to 3.0 g instead of 3.5 g → inventory doesn’t reconcile. Fix: Set correct Unit Weight and adjust as needed.
Forgetting Order Quantity Changing to Units but not entering Order Quantity means no pre-pack units are created. Fix: Enter the number of packages you’re making and Save.
