Make Your Cash Drawer Pop When a Receipt Prints

Make Your Cash Drawer Pop When a Receipt Prints
Most receipt printers with a cash drawer port (DK/RJ-11) can trigger the cash drawer when a receipt prints.

Windows: Enable the cash drawer setting in the printer driver. This works for Star Micronics, Epson, and most receipt printer brands.

Mac, iPad & Android: Marijuana Software only supports cash drawer popping through Star Micronics printers using CloudPRNT.
1 • Confirm What You Need
a. Windows: Use a receipt printer installed on the computer, with the cash drawer connected to the printer’s DK/RJ-11 port.
b. Mac, iPad & Android: Use a Star Micronics CloudPRNT model, such as an mC-Print or supported TSP model, with the drawer connected to the printer’s DK port.
2 • Enable Cash Drawer Pop on Windows
a.

Open Devices and Printers.
Windows path: Settings > Bluetooth and Devices > Devices > More Devices and Printer Settings.

Mac path: Apple Menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

b. Right-click your receipt printer and select Printer Properties.
c. Open the hardware or device settings tab. This may be labeled Device Settings, Star Line, EPSON Advanced, or similar.
d. Find the drawer setting. It may be called Cash Drawer, Drawer Kick, DK Port, or Peripheral Unit.
e. Enable the drawer and choose when it should open: Document Top to open at the start of printing, or Document Bottom to open at the end.
f. If available, set the pulse width to about 200 ms.
g. Click Apply or OK.
h. Right-click the printer again, open Printing Preferences, then Advanced, and match the same drawer settings if available.
i. Print a POS receipt or Windows test page to confirm the drawer opens.
3 • Use CloudPRNT for Mac, iPad & Android
a. Confirm your printer is a supported Star Micronics CloudPRNT model.
b. Connect the cash drawer cable to the printer’s DK port.
c. Register and connect the printer using the CloudPRNT setup process:
How to configure wireless printing on my Star printer (CloudPRNT)
d. After CloudPRNT is configured, printing receipts from Mac, iPad, or Android will trigger the cash drawer.
4 • Tips & Best Practices
a. Cable & Port: Make sure the RJ-11 cable is firmly connected to the printer’s DK port. Do not plug it into Ethernet or phone ports.
b. Timing: If the drawer opens too early or too late, switch between Start of Document and End of Document triggers and/or adjust the pulse width.
c. Paper Size: Use 72mm × 200mm paper size to help prevent receipt truncation that may interfere with drawer kicks.
5 • Troubleshooting
a. Drawer does not open on Windows: Recheck printer driver settings, verify the DK cable, try another cable or drawer, print a Windows test page, and power-cycle the printer and computer.
b. Drawer does not open on Mac, iPad, or Android: Confirm the printer is a supported CloudPRNT model, is online in your account, and has the drawer connected to the DK port.
✅ All set. Windows cash drawers open through printer driver settings. Mac, iPad, and Android cash drawers open through Star CloudPRNT.
